The Ultimate Guide to Treating Your Pet on National Pet Day

“Until one has loved an animal a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” – Anatole France

Whether you have a dog, cat, guinea pig, fish, turtle, bird, cow, horse, or any other pet, this quote couldn’t be truer. Our beloved animal companions certainly hold a special place in our heart.

Which is why Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert Colleen Paige decided to establish National Pet Day in 2006.

The goal of this celebration held annually on April 11th is to “celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters and rescues all around the globe.”

Do you have a pet you plan on celebrating on April 11th? If not, don’t worry. You can still take part in National Pet Day.

Here’s 7 ways you can celebrate National Pet Day.

Take Your Animal for a Walk

If your pet enjoys getting out of the house, take them for a walk around the neighborhood or at a local park and trail system. If you don’t have a pet yourself, there are shelters that encourage volunteers to come spend time with and walk rescue animals.

Do Some Spring Cleaning

After a while pet toys can get broken down or become too dirty to be usable. National Pet Day is a great day to take inventory of pet toys and clean them out.

Buy Your Pet a Toy

After getting rid of all the dirty and broken toys, you’ll want to replenish your beloved pet’s toy stock with some fun new pet toys.

Make them Homemade Treats

Pets aren’t picky. They would be more than happy to have a store-bought treat, but nothing says you love your pet more than baking them a healthy, homemade treat. Donate to a Shelter

This is a great way to celebrate National Pet Day whether you have a pet or not. Many shelters are running at capacity and could use all the help they can get. A donation of your time, money, or supplies is always greatly appreciated.

Get Your Pet to the Vet

Sure, it isn’t fun but an important part of keeping our beloved pets healthy is getting them annual checkups and vaccinations at the vet.

Take Your Pet to the Senior Center or Children’s Hospital

Very few things in life spread as much joy and love as a pet. And sharing your beloved pet with others who may be in dismal situations is a great way to spread cheer and celebrate the day.

Do you have an elderly loved one that has a beloved animal companion? Share this article with them or even better yet, plan a special visit with them on April 11th so you can experience National Pet Day together.
